Chichen Itza, a majestic capital city of the Mayan civilization

Chichen Itza is one of the majestic capital cities of the Mayan civilization, located in the north of the Yucatan Peninsula. Its Maya name means "Mouth of the Well of the Itza", and it was the most important city of the Mayan culture between 750 and 1200 A.C.

Declared World Site Heritage by UNESCO in 1988, today Chichen Itza is one of Mexico’s most visited archaeological sites, it’s architectonic beauty and its historical secrets make it a magical place.

The greatness of its buildings, its visual perfection and the immensity of the site will change your perspective on the Mayan culture forever. Chichen Itza is characterized by a series of outstanding constructions such as "El Castillo" or "pyramid of Kukulcan", the Great Ball Court and the Observatory "Caracol".

El Castillo is the most important pyramidal construction of Chichen Itza and excels by its glorious height and perfect symmetry. One of the main attractions of this millennium wonder is its the light phenomenon of Spring Equinox, when by the effect of the sunlight a figure of a serpent descending the exterior stairway of the pyramid can be observed.

The symbolic descent of the “Feathered Serpent” called Kukulcan, result of the historic Mayan beliefs, is admired every year at Chichén Itzá by hundreds of visitors from all over the world.

The pyramid El Castillo leads us towards the Sacred Cenote. Surrounded by Mayan legends of sacrifices, rituals and death, this great water mirror is the jewel of Chichén Itza and transports you in a glance to a time of gods alive among nature.

The Great Ball Court is a space of great dimensions that is visited by walking in the middle of long stone platforms that run parallel side to side, and offer a unique acoustic effect. In this mystical site one can feel a great proximity to the ballgame imagining the varied forms that this particular Mayan activity involved.

The buildings constructed during the prosperous time of Chichen Itza are architectonic masterpieces that emphasize the splendor of the mayan civilization, we can visit them and admire as a sample of the history of humanity.

Chichen Itza presently counts with a service unit that includes an admission center, a craft market, a museum and shops. When planning your trip to this archaeological zone you must consider the distance from the place where you are staying, either in Cancun, the Mayan Riviera or in the Yucatan.
